William Thomas Congleton

W.T. Congleton Co. is a third generation company founded in 1915 by William Thomas Congleton. Mr. Congleton worked at his cousin’s business, Congleton Lumber for several years where he developed his business skills. His first business was Southern Building and Supply located at 362 E. Main Street in Lexington, Kentucky. A few years later, he purchased property in Lexington at the corner of Walton Ave. and Third Street and started W.T. Congleton Co., which sold building supplies and expanded into the construction business which included the manufacturing of concrete. The company also developed a successful coal contract business, providing coal to many businesses in Lexington. The company remained in the general contracting business until the passing of Mr. Congleton in 1949. One of Mr. Congleton’s dreams came to fruition in 1948 when after years of studying and conferring with son Lucien, the company installed the first Central-Mix Concrete Plant in Lexington.

Lucien Congleton assumed the business after the passing of his father and turned the focus of the company to providing Ready-Mix Concrete to an increasing customer base in Lexington. Prior to assuming the business, Lucien graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in engineering, which enabled him to work for the state government. After serving in the army from 1941-1945 during World War II, Lucien returned to Lexington where he did engineering work for the Congleton's until assuming the business. He continued to run the company until his son Robert assumed control of the business in 1982.

Robert Congleton is the current president of the company and is active in its day to day business.
